About John Glover

The Winner of the Glover Prize 2006
for a Landscape Painting of Tasmania was

David Keeling
Oil on linen, 182 x 152 cm
His oil on board painting is titled "45 minute walk - Narawntapu" David reports that this painting is one of a series of paintings dealing with the West Head section of the Narawntapu National Park in northern Tasmania. He wrote in his artist's statement that "I am interested in the play of light as it passes across the trees, casting shadows onto foliage and across the ground.
Even though this is a compromised space, as it is where people park their cars to go on the coastal walk it is a hauntingly beautiful spot. There is a quiet melancholy that surrounds you and I hope that a little of this comes through in the painting"

David Keeling was born in Launceston, Tasmania in 1951. He attended Swinburne Film and Television School, Victoria and the Alexander Mackie School of Art in Sydney. David has acted as Chairman and Board member of Contemporary Art Services Tasmania, and Artbank, Sydney. He currently lives and works in Hobart.

Two other works were mentioned for high commendation. They are:

Helen Wright "Kelso - there is a light that never goes out"
Oil on canvas, 46 x 180cm

"This series of paintings traces the lights descent into darkness from the late afternoon, to evening and then the night. By working from a series of snapshots taken sequentially, although not necessarily on the same day, the works explore the atmosphere and mood created by the river beacon and the particular light of the Tamar estuary."

Michael F. McWilliams "Another Dry Summer"
Acrylic on canvas, 134 x 174cm

"This painting is a view of a dying landscape from almost the highest point on McCraes Hills looking back towards the Western Tiers. McCraes Hills is between Cressy and Blackwood Creek if you are travelling by road. Although a beautiful view the painting is intended to emphasise the increasingly dry summers we are experiencing and the effects of Global warming."

The Judges:
Professor Noel Frankham, Head Tasmanian School of Art, University of Tasmania, Hobart
Rick Amor, Artist, Melbourne
Elizabeth Ann McGregor, Director, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney

Leo Schofield was Master of ceremonies and spoke eloquently about John Glover and his relevance to the current Australian art scene. Martin Flanagan, journalist of Melbourne spoke of the impact and image of landscape upon indigenous and new settlers. Over 450 guests attended the opening night cocktail party at which the announcement of the winner of the 2006 Prize was made.

The cheque for $20,000 was presented by Julia Farrell, Director on behalf of the principal sponsor Federal Hotels and Resorts and the bronze marquette statue of John Glover was presented by Pamela Graham of Launceston Airport.
The exhibition was open for public viewing from Saturday 11th March to Tuesday 14th March inclusive with the collection achieving over 4000 visitors over the four days. Over 50% of the finalist paintings were purchased during the exhibition, which is a resounding endorsement of the Glover Prize's standing in the community.

The Greg Waddle Peoples' Choice Winner was Lisa Falk's work titled "Gnothi Seauton! Apollo's Golden Lyre, & The Citrinous Quintessence",
(Bluestone Rock Oracle 1.). Bluestone Bay, Freycinet Peninsula.

"As I drew out the ethereal breath of wind, it stirred the sacred cirrus ibis and the aerial wings of the dove into motion. The pneuma blew across the waters of the psyche to reveal the logos, the golden lapis, and the pith of the yellow citrinous quintessence within this drawing. These treasures provided clarity, shelter from the storm, healing, and self-knowledge. 'Gnothi Seauton' means 'Know Thyself'. These words were carved into the stone lintel of Apollo's oracular temple at Delphi. Self-knowledge is the beginning of wisdom, transformation, and regeneration. This Rock oracle was lyric inspiration for my artful soul."

The cheque for $3,000 was presented by Chris Taylor, Northern Manager of Roberts Ltd.

Exhibition Coordinator was Jane Deeth. Jane is a freelance consultant who is well known in Tasmania for her experience in coordinating many exhibitions of importance in the state. Her creativity and knowledge was invaluable in ensuring that this unique architectural space and the finalist paintings created an atmosphere of dialogue and excitement.
