Black Earth, Scamander

The image relates to the December bush fires that desecrated the small seaside town of Scamander in North East Tasmania. It is from a digital image taken from a television report of the event that resulted in a rather blurred and ill-defined photograph suitable for my particular aims as a painter. My interest in the traditional ‘painted object’ and the gestural openness of abstract expressionism allow for a landscape locked in suspension between abstraction and figuration.
