King Island storm cast – yellow pink variation 1

During a recent residency on King Island, I was drawn to the island’s untamed coastline, where the dynamic interplay of kelp, algae, and water created a vibrant landscape. I often travelled along the winding cobbled kelp tracks, witnessing the lush kelp beds, their dark brown and golden tendrils tangled with vivid pink, red, and orange algae. This rich, intricate tapestry of life was deeply moving, especially in the context of the 95% depletion of Tasmania’s kelp forests in recent decades. The sustainable harvesting on King Island offered a glimpse of nature’s resilience. My work, through fluid painting processes, seeks to capture this delicate balance—suggesting the growth patterns and rhythms of natural forces, such as wind and water, that shape the land. The layers of pigment evoke the movement of seeds, spores, and microorganisms, offering a vision of landscape not as static, but as a living, interconnected system in perpetual flux.
