Strangers in an Alien Landscape

The painting depicts the Midlands with the dryness of early spring and the influence of man on a new landscape with the introduction of foreign species, quercus, merinos, and scotch thistle. It evokes Elliot’s ‘The Wasteland’ – man’s isolation from himself, alienation by technology, the deep instinctual longings for time past, for a connection to nature.
