The Derwent – Oysters, Bone, Lead Shot & Heavy Metal
The Dickensian scale of the zinc smelter on the Derwent is an oppressive, magnificent reminder that we live in an age when such sites engender more questions than answers than they would have in 1917 when the ore from Broken Hill was brought to Tasmania to create jobs, industry and profit. Tasmania continues to wrestle with this contentious battle between economic interest and its uniquely exquisite landscape, which itself has become part of the fray for future viability.
