Before the flood

This is a very personal painting. My husband in this photo was one month away from having a bone marrow transplant. We travelled to Tasmania to regroup and for him to write letters to our daughter to be given to her in the future, should his transplant be unsuccessful. In reality I sketched them as they were standing in the current, flooded Lake Pedder, however I have placed them into the landscape of how Lake Pedder once looked before it was flooded. Layers of time and water. The mountainous background is dense, dark and flat. The foreground: an impossible moment. Lake Pedder is a strange place. You could be forgiven for thinking it is beautiful if you don’t know the story.
