After the blizzard

This work has been in the making for almost two decades. It started life as a large en plein air gouache painting at the Waldheim cabins at the foot of Cradle Mountain soon after a blizzard had scared us off the adjacent mountain. Over the years since many paintings have left my studio however this one never quite made it until I felt that the moments immediately after the blizzard had been captured.

Around Cradle Mountain the weather can turn very quickly, sky and ground become one, water streaming from both or the white of the clouds sprinkled as snow beneath you. Trees and undergrowth ferociously contest the space around them.

‘After the Blizzard’ portrays the rich concert of all that has happened, the bright green mosses and lichen audience to the tangle above them, the rivulets through them and the remnant clouds passing over them as them.
