After the Mine

A few nicely renovated cottages scattered high on the hill above a flooded mine are all that remains of Grassy, where my father installed King Island’s first electricity supply. Far below, the dark waters are surrounded by a barren waste, a memory of mine workings, offices, crib-rooms and workshops, generators, mills and the mighty crusher. Arcane machinery of forgotten purpose rusts among encroaching vegetation.
