Bay of Fires (rockshelf)
Bay of Fires (Rockshelf) was painted in response to several trips up Tasmania’s east coast in recent years – specifically, the Bicheno and Bay of Fires areas. What attracted me there was not so much the iconic orange boulders, so frequently captured by painters and photographers, but rather the contrasts of light and dark in the stormy seas and foam-flecked gullies – a romantic painter’s dream. Hence, this painting attempts to capture the feel of place, the suck and pull of relentless surf after a passing storm. The endless collision of sea against land.
