Black Charlie’s Opening

Black Charlie was an Aboriginal member of a chain gang breaking rocks for roads on the Prosser Plains in the 1830s. He was known as being particularly distressed by this incarceration and punishment. I have painted the ‘opening’ on a spring day in sunshine and I hope somehow he felt warmed and heartened by the sun on his back too.
