Fallen tree #88

I am an Australian-born artist based in Paris. My largest ongoing project “every fallen tree” (2018 – ) involves documenting 7000 fallen trees – a number that pays homage to Joseph Beuys’s work 7000 Eichen (7000 Oaks) (1982). The documentation involves meticulous recording of the GPS location of each fallen tree, using a porcelain pressing to dually register the texture of the tree’s surface and the contours of my hand against it. I also do a painting of each tree – an act of reverence. This painting is fallen tree #88. It is a large oil on canvas painting. The tree was found in the Upper Florentine Valley, Tasmania.

My practice is primarily focused on painting but integrating diverse methods like walking, ceramics, installation, robotics, performance, and GPS technology. My practice revolves around the repetitive cycle of leaving and returning to the studio and urban environments, emphasising walking as a ritual to explore human impact on air, water, vegetation, and geology.
