Midland Tree

The Midlands has many dead or dying skeletal eucalypts protruding from the dry barren land. They present a testimony, both beautiful and horrifying, of colonial man’s desire to control and manipulate the landscape of this beautiful island and turn it into the lush green pastoral land of England. Glover stood as one who saw the beauty already present here. In the catalogue to his 1835 exhibition Glover noted: “There is a remarkable peculiarity to the Trees of this Country.”
