Nightward Again, Longford, Tasmania
This year I have been painting in the Northern Midlands of Tasmania, specifically the Norfolk Plains of Brickendon Estate. This is an agricultural area, colonised in the early 1800s, was previously occupied by Indigenous people. Their occupation has not been erased and sits in and on the landscape as a quiet reminder.
The land is now ordered by European settlement, however the looming mountains surrounding this landscape and the vast, often brooding sky sitting above, speak of history and immense amounts of time embedded in the land.
Having lived in Tasmania all my life I am a keen observer of the seasonal skies and light – I paint the now colonial landscape with a reverence and sensitivity for what was before.
