On The Holy Pilgrimage – Mt Nelson

“The pilgrimage is one of the basic modes of walking, walking in search of something tangible”. – Rebecca Solnit [Wunderlust: A History of Walking]

For as long as Hobart College has been situated on Mt Nelson there has been the inherited practice among young people of walking through the surrounding bushland; to kill time, to find the right log or stone to sit on, to cut class and smoke weed, to pick the abundant psilocybin, to build stuff out of debris, speculate on how a burned-out car found itself in the middle of nowhere.

Central to all of these extra-curricular activities is the ‘Holy Pilgrimage’ trail that runs from the Hobart College Carpark to the Mt Nelson corner store.
