Tasman Passage

In late 2011, I went on a working bee to Tasman Island and Cape Pillar and managed to do some plein-air paintings in gouache when time and weather allowed. The scene almost stitched together two of these sketches, one looking into the light and the subtle gradations along the sea cliffs, and the other of the grand ramparts. I have used an almost Pointillist approach, using complementary coloured brushstrokes in the hope of achieving nit just a sense of the light but also that invisible thing, the air.
