The Memory Pool (Cataract Gorge, Launceston)
This work arose from my visual journal and was a response to the timeless qualities that were part of the landscape around Launceston. My work has an enduring focus on the metaphysical and consistently uses figurative themes, particularly those concerned with female representation.
Whether it is with the poetic or autobiographical, this painting reflects the sensibility that typifies my focus on the simple or everyday setting, yet suggests enigmatic, unnameable qualities beneath what is apparently familiar.
For me, the pool has a mythical symbolism, and the [Cataract] Gorge particularly suggests a setting of both the eternal and the real.
