The Road to Other – 24 May 2022
My painting depicts a cutting on the road out of the Queenstown valley in Western Tasmania, where I live. It’s a section of the so-called ’99 Bends’ of the Lyell Highway, and I’ve made many paintings of this road. The sad, degraded landscape gives way to World Heritage rainforest as one limps out of the shadow into the light on route to my family, friends, colleagues, curators, framers, gallerists, exhibitions, conference papers, meetings, commissions and networks. Moving amongst the ‘shades’. Cutting through.
