The Trees at Castra (for John Glover)

After viewing Glover’s work at the exhibition Glover and the Colonial Picturesque at TMAG a decade ago, I started to appreciate that perhaps Glover, in his odd trees, was showing us the experience of confronting those forms for the first time; that observation and accuracy were only part of his intension. This painting recalls that shift in my appreciation of Glover’s works and consequently a renewed appreciation of my own migratory encounter with the Tasmanian landscape, ranging across personal experience, historical fact and anecdotal narrative.
