The Twilight of a Tasmanian Town
I began this painting as a study of the quality of light that is uniquely Tasmanian. An unnamed town in the North-East lies along a road shadowed by wooded hills. A power line divides the image into light and dark halves. That wire made me think of different forms of communication and the future of such hamlets. The elderly woman stands in the shadows beside a pole illuminated by her phone. Is she waiting for a ride, or for someone to arrive? Or is she curious about the car parked down the road?
