This landscape doesn’t make sense
This landscape doesn’t make sense, 2025 came about from a challenge set to me by a close friend and muse; Chonny Fletcher. Upon reading my 2023 Honour’s exegesis, Chonny lamented that I used my green and white stripe too sparingly and in essence I minimise myself within each composition I paint. My green and white stripe acts as a kind of non-human alter ego and is ever-present within each of my works. I set about experimenting with constructed landscapes made entirely out of my painted stripes and this work is part of the resulting series. Tasmania is a place that is close to my heart and this composition is derived from a source photograph taken by me on a recent self-directed residency to the east coast. The work depicts a typical Tasmanian bucolic setting. Cottages in the mid ground, highway in the foreground and mountains in the background. By way of my alter ego, I am present in each and every moment in this work which speaks to a methodological approach that engages in queer phenomenology. The paint is handled loosely and generously which for me evokes a bodily sense in the setting.
