Paul Gundry

Whose dwelling is the light of setting suns, 2009

oil on canvas

122 x 122cm

From the artist

Like a romantic wanderer I set off in the late afternoon, timing my arrival with the last rays of sun still illuminating the riverside plain of the Derwent Valley. When the light is right, typical suburban homes with their faint Palladian echoes are transported from a Claudian landscape of Golden Age, Arcadian atmospherics. It is a seemingly idyllic vision and I wonder if I should stay here – out here in the outer suburbs?
